Valentine’s Day Decor: The Ultimate Guide

December 11, 2024 · In: Decor

If you love celebrating love… you probably also love Valentine’s. And, when it comes to decorating, you have the hearts, the reds and pinks, the chocolates, the teddy bears… and, well, that’s about it. Decorating the same way for consecutive years can get boring, right?

But, it doesn’t have to. Especially if you use some unconventional ideas that whisper Valentine’s—instead of shouting it. Keep reading for such ideas (and, of course, some conventional ones) ❤️

Valentine Day Decorating Ideas

Valentine’s Day Color Schemes

To reiterate… these aren’t your traditional reds and pinks 😉

Sage Green + Blush Pink + Gold

This one’s perfect for a nature-inspired setting that’s also romantic. Sage green is calming; pink is softening.

Lavender + Mustard Yellow + Cream

We love this combo for a boho setup. Lavender is romantic—but less predictable than pink. Mustard yellow adds a cheerful pop to the palette.

Deep Teal + Coral + Copper

If you’re hosting a chic dinner for Valentine’s, this palette will set just the right mood. Teal adds this interesting depth; copper adds a metallic glow.

Navy Blue + Wine Red + Champagne Gold

The perfect combo for an opulent Valentine’s Day soiree. Navy blue adds drama and wine red brings in the romance.

Valentine Day Decorating Ideas

Charcoal Grey + Soft Peach + Dusty Rose

For a minimalist and contemporary Valentine’s Day. Charcoal gray gives a modern edge to the setup. But we’re sticking to the romantic vibe with soft peach and dusty rose.

Mint Green + Tangerine + White

This palette doesn’t have the reds or pinks—but that’s its beauty. It’s a fresh, spring-inspired palette that will give your home a fresh look for Valentine’s, but will also last for the upcoming blooming season.

Plum Purple + Rose Gold + Ivory

For a glamorous celebration! Plum adds richness; this is balanced by the warm glow of rose gold.

Black + White + Red

Of course, the classic. This is great for a high-contrast Valentine’s Day look. You know, the extreme ends of white and black. Plus, the middle tone of red.

Peacock Blue + Magenta + Silver

We love this combination for the bold look it creates. Peacock blue is downright luxurious, while magenta is bold.

Valentine’s Day Intimate Corner

Nothing says “I love you” quite like an intimate space that you can enjoy with your partner—and a cozy corner will serve just the purpose. The best part about this is that it can be done with whatever you have available at home. But if you’re willing to spend, there are a few cute pieces!

Choose a pair of soft-cushioned chairs or loveseats. Drape a cozy Valentine’s throw blanket over the seating (bonus points for an accent pillow—or two). You can also use some string lights around the area for the ultimate cozy feeling. And some Valentine’s scented candles to set the mood.

Oh, and the sweet treats! Use a small nightstand to hold your favorite sweets. If it were us, we’d be going big on chocolate truffles and macarons (stay tuned till the end for some more of our favorites).

Valentine’s Day Decor Ideas

We’ve talked about color palettes, cozy corners, tablescapes, and now onto our favorite part: the decorations. Below, we’ll share some of our favorite ideas:

Create a Heartfelt Wreath

Valentine Day Decorating Ideas

A heart-shaped wreath on your front door—or on the wall of your intimate nook—can create such a beautiful impact. There are plenty of options available on the market, but we love a good DIY! For example, this felt heart wreath is sooo stunning, it won’t even look like you did it yourself. It’s easy to make, but can take quite a few evenings, so you’d want to consider that. The good part is that there are plenty of different DIY wreath ideas you can use.

Top Your Straws with Hearts

Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without decking your home with hearts—and that includes the top of your straws. Creating small hearts and topping them on your straws will instantly make your guests’ Snapchat selfies so much cuter!

Tie the Knot (Literally)

… with decorative clay knots. Decorative knot sculptures are the new trend in town—and we’d love to repurpose them for Valentine’s and you’ll be symbolizing unbreakable bonds in your space ❤

… Or Show a Broken Heart

Valentine Day Decorating Ideas

If you’re hosting a Galentines party with your BFFs, recognize how awesome it is to have a girl gang with a broken heart pinata. Trust us—the feeling of beating it and ending up with some candy will be priceless.

Create an Oversized Balloon Garland

If you’re creating a setup for Valentine’s with a table full of treats, you might as well draw attention to it with an oversized balloon garland. You’ll need colorful balloons (great opportunity to pick a palette from above), some fresh flowers, and balloon tape.

Light Up with Sequins

Let’s just say, marquee lights are the “it” decoration this year—and your friends and family will love it when it’s made with sequins! It’s much about gluing sequins to a marquee heart light (or shape of your choice).

Make a Wild Flower Arrangement

The more flowers, the better—especially on Valentine’s. Fill a vase with large, fresh flowers, and it will instantly bring the romantic feel to your space (even if it’s a kinda messy kitchen counter 😁).

Use Playing Cards for the Garland

You want the red-and-white—and a playful vibe. The easiest way to achieve it? Punch holes into the top of playing cards and tie them onto a ribbon garland using colorful string. This gives you a playful but Valentine’s-friendly (and cheap!) garland.

Upgrade Your Crockery

Step up the game and serve your sweetie in style with some marble birchwood trays. We’re huge fans of Dash and Splash’s Birchwood Trays; they’re SO gorgeous + come in cocktail as well as serving size. If you’re looking to go all out, you’re going to love these heart-shaped bowls.

Create a Cute Arrow Sign

Valentine Day Decorating Ideas

If you’re looking for something cute to display on your entryway—or even the mantel—a cute arrow sign will look fantastic! What we love about it is that it’s easy to make—and even easier to put away when the lovey-dovey season is over 😉

Set Up a Heart-Shaped Donut Wall

Display your desserts in the sweetest way by hanging them on a pegboard. While you can find a heart-shaped pegboard in the market—like this one on Etsy—you can also create your own with this fun DIY.

Go For a Quick Balloon Garland

If you don’t have time to put together those extensive garlands, a quick fix is a balloon garland. Get XOXO balloons in red and hang them on a string for a cute but bold backdrop for your Valentine’s Day photos.

Make LOVE Wall String Art

String art only looks complicated. When you try it out, you’ll see how quickly it comes together—and even makes for a great project to have your kids involved! Get a piece of lightweight wood and paint it. Trace out a heart shape using a pencil—and stencil the outline of the word of your choice (LOVE is a good idea!). Tap thin nails along the lines of the shape and word above half an inch apart. Then, loop a thin yarn from nail to nail until you have it as complicated as you wish.

Create a Valentine’s Day Gallery Wall

No need to drop cash on pre-made Valentine’s Day art; it’s so simple to make yourself. Just purchase a few canvases and design hearts on them using different materials. For example, pom-poms, yarn, string, etc. The end result will be so cute, you can even use it in your little girl’s room after Valentine’s is over.

DIY Color-Block Pillows

Those pink and hearty accent pillows are great for Valentine’s, but don’t quite last you after the occasion. Instead, consider pieced-together blocks of felted wool to make a custom pillowcase. And because the edges of felted wool won’t fray, you can use lapped seams. This pillowcase will be subtly Valentine’s-friendly, but will also last you for the rest of the year.
